New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of January 31

This week there's a lot of new stuff to tell y'all about it. Leonard Cohen has a new LP out along with The Jealous Sound. And you guys should definitely check out Hospitality and Imperial Teen, they both have releases out today on Merge Records. And the buzzworthy release from Lana Del Rey is out today. Check out 'em out and we'll see you at the store! -Emily

CDs:

Leonard Cohen – Old Ideas CD/LP+CD (Columbia)
Cohen’s first new album in 8 years.

The Jealous Sound - A Gentle Reminder CD (Militia Group)
New album from the recently reunited indie/emo outfit.

Hospitality - Hospitality CD/LP (Merge)
The angular, intricate, and intelligent compositions of Hospitality signal a sophisticated new pop voice. Singer Amber Papini's idiosyncratic songwriting coupled with the band's rich arrangements on their self-titled debut is recommended for fans of Camera Obscura and Twin Sister.

Imperial Teen – Feel The Sound CD/LP (Merge)
ELO-like symphonic pop has become a touchstone for everyone from Justice to Cut Copy in recent years, but this makes it manifest through live instrumentation that possesses a Krautrock level of intuitive synchronicity and a desert island jukebox's sense of fun.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die CD (Interscope)
Del Rey calls herself the “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” and defines her genre as “Hollywood pop/ sadcore” a dramatic new loop for pop music. Her debut features the hit singles "Blue Jeans" and "Video Games."

New and/or Notable Stuff for the Week of November 15

This week I'm really excited about the latest from Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover. NPR put the full album up on their site and I haven't stopped listening to it since. We've also got some great new stuff from Los Campesinos!, Caveman, Crystal Stilts and more! Check out the full list and we'll see you at the store! - Emily

We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here ---> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX

CDs:

Childish Gambino - Camp CD (Glassnote)
A unique blend of hip-hop with multiple genres, combined with lyrical genius, Gambino has gone from a viral cult following to a mega sensation. Vinyl version due December 6. Free patch with purchase -- while supplies last!

Los Campesinos! - Hello Sadness CD/LP (Arts & Crafts)
Fourth album with tracks covering love, loss, heartbreak, football (always football).

Caveman - Coco Beware CD/LP (Original Recordings Group)
Caveman’s sound is equal parts chamber pop, dreamscape, and horror film score.

Crystal Stilts - Radiant Door CDEP/12” (Sacred Bones)
Opening track "Dark Eyes" may be their strongest song to date, unshackling them from their fuzzy reputation, which, even at its heaviest, could never obscure one from this bands dexterous songcraft.

Pterodactyl - Spills Out CD/LP (Jagjaguwar)
Brooklyn noise-punk mischief-makers Pterodactyl have mutated from their abrasive loft-show roots into a glorious, broken-pop juggernaut. The band's squealing, sweat-soaked art-bustle had rapidly put them alongside contemporaries like Oneida, These Are Powers and Parts & Labor, but Spills Out gently leads the trio towards the uplifting, wistful harmonies of '60s rockers like The Zombies, CSNY and the pre-acid Beatles.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the Week of November 8

This week we've got some great stuff for you, I'm really excited about Kurt Vile's new EP So Outta Reach and Atlas Sound's Parallax. We've also got some great new stuff from Thee Oh See (AND they're playing a show at The EARL on Friday, 11/11 tickets --> http://ticketalternative.com/Events/15869.aspx) and a favorite of mine, Cass McCombs. So, stop by the store this week and check these titles out and more! - Emily

CDs:

Kurt Vile - So Outta Reach 12” (Matador)
New 6-track EP companion to Smoke Ring For My Halo.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo [Deluxe Edition] 2xCD (Matador)
Deluxe expanded edition includes a bonus disc featuring the new 6-track So Outta Reach EP.

Atlas Sound - Parallax CD/LP (4AD)
Third long player from the ever-expansive solo project from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter. Atlas Sound is not a "side-project," but rather a fully fleshed musical landscape chock-full of pop chronicles culled from sci-fi fever dreams and mid century rock.

Cass McCombs - Humor Risk CD/LP (Domino)
Humor Risk is perhaps Cass' most upbeat album yet, showing him in a more optimistic mood, and could be seen as the happier, more hopeful sister record to Wit's End.

Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler/The Dream CD/LP (In The Red)
New album captures the riot-sparking energy of their live show. While Castlemania was more of a vocal tirade, Carrion Crawler/The Dream is meant to pummel and throb.

CDs:

Girl In A Coma - Exits & All The Rest CD/LP (Blackheart)
“I wish Girl In A Coma had released an album when I was growing up in the 1970s. The band cranks its amps in the style of the classic-rock power trios I listened to back then, though it swaps out the testosterone with a sense of graceful defiance.” -- NPR

Brite Futures - Dark Past CD/LP (Turnout)
A youthful swaggering mix of synth-happy pop, rock, funk, disco, and new wave that the band likes to describe as "punk rock Abba disco Osmonds with chainsaws."

The Soft Moon - Total Decay CDEP/LP (Captured Tracks)
“The title track ably walks the line between Factory Records ghost-moan postpunk and straight-up scary noise.” -- Stereogum

New and/or Notable Releases for the Week of October 25

I've got a lot of awesome stuff to tell you about! First, let me say I'm super excited about the new Phantogram EP in addition to new releases from The Beets, Spectrals, and Surfer Blood. And I'm sure it's WAAAY too early for this, but the new She & Him Christmas album is just perfect. A must have on your turntable at Christmas time for sure. What are you guys excited about this week? We'll see y'all at the store! - Emily

CDs:

Phantogram - Nightlife CDEP (Barsuk)
New six-song EP from the indie-synth duo.

She And Him - A Very She And Him Christmas CD/LP (Merge)
Deschanel and Ward let the holiday tunes speak for themselves, oftentimes recording them with just acoustic guitar and vocals. Available on CD and on red vinyl.

Surfer Blood - Tarot Classics CDEP/LP+DVD(Kanine)
New EP featuring remixes by Totally Sincere and Speculator. Deluxe vinyl version features bonus remixes by School Of Seven Bells and Allen Blickle and alternative mixes of the EP tracks by Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) in the download, along with live concert bootleg DVD.

Spectrals - Bad Penny CD/LP+MP3 (Slumberland)
Spectrals is 21-year-old Louis Jones. Mixing ingredients of pop, soul, doo-wop and garage rock ballads, it sounds vintage but current, while the Yorkshire lilt in Jones’s voice (a result of his hometown, Heckmondwike) places him firmly in the UK, rather than Detroit.

The Beets - Let The Poison Out CD/LP (Hardly Art)
All of the Beets elements are here; jangly acoustic guitar, simply captured sing-along lyrics about yourself, being free, not fitting in, and an undercurrent of restless energy.

CDs:

Gauntlet Hair - Gauntlet Hair CD/LP (Dead Oceans)
Gauntlet Hair is a subtle refinement of the sounds we've come to associate with the band: the trunk-rattling bass; the ecstatic, tinny post-punk guitar; the din of ecstasy.

Real Estate - Days CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
A gorgeous suite of timelessly melodic, achingly melancholy pop songs. This is the next big step in the career of a uniquely close songwriting collective that feel more important with every release.

M83 - Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming 2cCD/2xLP (Mute)
Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming features contributions from Brad Laner (from ‘90s band Medicine) on guitar, Zola Jesus, and Saturdays=Youth vocalist Morgan Kibby.

Class Actress - Reproacher CD/LP (Carpark)
Brooklyn's Class Actress put forth their debut longplayer, which features front person Elizabeth Harper’s winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion backed mostly with electronics, a style reminiscent of Yaz's Alison Moyet.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Tape Club CD/2xLP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)
A carefully curated 26-song collection that serves as the culmination of a decade's worth of unreleased tracks.

Kimya Dawson - Thunder Thighs CD/2xLP (Great Crap Factory)
Ex-Moldy Peaches singer/songwriter who garnered a lot of attention for the Grammy nominated and platinum-selling soundtrack to Juno. The album features guest performances by rapper/producer Aesop Rock plus members of The Strokes, Mountain Goats, and more.

Pujol - Nasty, Brutish, And Short CD/10”+MP3 (Saddle Creek)
Garage pop with real hooks and a palpable DYI edge.

CDs:

Zola Jesus - Conatus CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
A huge leap forward in production, instrumentation and song structure. From thumping ballads to electronic glitch, this is an icy exploration in refined chaos and controlled madness, an effort to break through capability and access a sonic world that crumbles as it shines.

Feist - Metals CD/LP (Interscope)
Like The Reminder, Metals is astoundingly intimate, yet often exuberant; rife with transcendent and unforgettable pop gems.

CDs:

Gem Club - Breakers CD/LP (Hardly Art)
Cavernous-sounding piano-based ballads that, despite their earthly trappings, feel truly ethereal, as if they're being piped in from another planet bereft of gravity.

Youth Lagoon - The Year Of Hibernation CD/LP (Fat Possum)
“There are nods to classic rock and indie all over the record. Whether he knows it or not it doesn’t matter. The guitars remind me of druggy Stone Roses. They compliment everything. I hear Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips in the vocal melodies and performance. Elton John in his piano. Supertramp in the arrangements. There is early Aphex Twin in his percussion.” Rabbit Hole Urban Music

Mastodon - The Hunter CD/CD+DVD (Reprise)
Follow-up to 2009's critically embraced Crack The Skye. Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe adds a DVD that includes a track-by-track, psychedelic visualizer, as well as the "Deathbound" and "Black Tongue" videos.

Dum Dum Girls - Only In Dreams CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Only In Dreams blends deeply personal lyrics inspired by the death of singer Dee Dee's mother and the strain of separation from loved ones with the band's signature blend of '60s girl-gang pop, the primitive propulsion of The Cramps and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star.

Twin Sister - In Heaven CD/LP (Domino)
Twin Sister’s debut full-length after two beloved EPs. In Heaven radiates and glows. It's a firework show set against a broad black canvas; youthful exuberance echoes throughout.

CDs:

Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost CD/LP+7” (True Panther Sounds)
More spontaneous and stripped-down than either their self-made debut or their lush EP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost is a gorgeous, largely minor-key record, enlivened by flashes of innocent pop and given depth by its wealth of influences and willingness to face sadness. Available on CD and on black and white vinyl with bonus flexi disc.

Strange Mercy showcases St. Vincent’s (Annie Clark) gift for fusing the cerebral and the visceral, her melodically elegant arrangements packing hefty emotional punches.

CDs:

Beirut - The Rip Tide CD/LP+MP3 (Pompeii)
Beginning life as small melodies conceived on piano or ukulele, the Rip Tide was built upon by the entire band in the studio before Zach Condon's paring down and retrofitting. The results sound like they were recorded in a single session, with exciting rhythms matching the upbeat horns and contrasting the mournful strings. We have special edition LPs and CDs while supplies last!

Jacuzzi Boys - Glazin’ CD/LP+MP3 (Hardly Art)
Jacuzzi Boys hail from Miami and play fuzzy, metallic, power pop anthems.

Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder CD/LP (Tri Angle)
A mysterious and genuinely haunting record. Even though Wander/Wonder is undeniably an electronic album, it feels strangely organic, rooted in nature, synthetic textures and distorted voices harmonizing with ever-present oceanic shimmer.

Blood Orange - Coastal Grooves CD/LP (Domino)
Blood Orange delves deeper into '80s American musical culture, crossing elements of melancholy synthetic pop with a twangy noir, composing songs exploring the harsh realities of romantic pursuits: longing, suspicion, jealousy, self-doubt and loneliness, to name but a few.

Jonny Corndawg - Down On The Bikini Line CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)
Jonny Corndawg is an infectious songwriter and burgeoning country star that worships at the altar of Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver and Michael Hurley.

Male Bonding - Endless Now CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
An album animated by infectious, evangelical zeal that reflects their roots in the DIY indie rock community. “[...] a fast, fuzzy rock band racing from hook to hook, plowing happily through breakdowns and guitar blasts, springing through scrappy melodies with style.” -- Pitchfork

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of August 23

This week we've got a lot of great stuff! New awesomeness from Stehpen Malkmus and The Jicks (I'm SO excited for this one!), Active Child, Ganglians, Stehpen Merritt, Sun Araw, and MORE! We've also got a lot of awesome releases out on vinyl that weren't available previously. Stop by the store and check 'em out! - Emily

We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here ---> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX

[Editor's note: Hey, y'all, some of these titles may not arrive at our store until later this week. It's usually just the indie label stuff that arrives later, like Thursday or Friday. Call ahead if you want to make sure the new thing you want really super-duper bad is actually in the stock right this very second. The store number is 404-215-9511. One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Stephen  Malkmus And The Jicks - Mirror Traffic CD/2xLP+MP3 (Matador)
Produced by Beck, this is Malkmus' most heartfelt and indelible work in years. Gone are the long guitar workouts and jams that marked the previous Jicks albums, replaced here by incredibly catchy and endearing pop songs.

Active Child - You Are All I See CD/LP (Vagrant)
Pat Grossi, otherwise known as Active Child -- is also a child of the ‘80s. You Are All I See sounds like a lost New Order album.

Ganglians - Still Living CD/2xLP (Lefse)
Ringing in at just under an hour, Still Living stays true to their psychedelic roots established on their first two albums. Here they step it up a notch both stylistically and sonically by enlisting the help of producer Robby Moncrieff (who also played a crucial role in the shaping of The Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca).

Stephin Merritt - Obscurities CD/LP (Merge)
A collection of Merritt's (Magnetic Fields) hard-to-find recordings dating back to his time on Merge (1994-1999) and prior. The 14 tracks -- including five previously unreleased songs -- were recorded prior to the seminal album 69 Love Songs.

Sun Araw - Ancient Romans CD/2xLP (Drag City/Sun Ark)
Heartfelt and marbled, Ancient Romans is documentation of the slow exit (the triumphal entry): moving the camera back eight stages along the circumference of the circle to the point where the obverse is reverse, in order to celebrate the building of an edifice and then walk away from it in wisdom, gaining freedom from it. Available on CD and on gatefold white vinyl with art book.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of August 16

Sorry for the delay, but here's the list of new and notable stuff for this week! This list includes my favorites War on Drugs and Yellow Ostrich. We've also got some great stuff out on vinyl! Stop by the store this week and check 'em out! - Emily

We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here ---> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX

One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

War On Drugs - Slave Ambient CD/2xLP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)
War On Drugs sophomore album is a brilliant 47-minute sprawl of rock & roll, conceptualized with a sense of adventure and captured with seasons of bravado.

Yellow Ostrich - The Mistress CD (Barsuk)
"When I think of Alex Schaaf, the immensely talented individual behind Yellow Ostrich, I'm reminded of the little engine that could... Of all the bedroom projects in recent years none has seemed more organic and earnest than this one. He seems completely unswayed by the micro-trends of the last few years, veering away from blog-house, chill-wave, and lo-fi punk.” -- I Guess I’m Floating

Mister Heavenly - Out Of Love CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Comprised of Nick Thornburn (Islands/Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man) and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse), Mister Heavenly is a threesome drawing inspiration from a shared love of 1950s vocal-based R&B classics by ensembles like The Penguins, The Platters and The Moonglows and also a fascination with ill-fated romance.

Jeff Bridges - Jeff Bridges CD (Blue Note)
A musician before his acting career took off, Bridges' award-winning and critically acclaimed role in 2009's Crazy Heart introduced his musical talents to a wider audience. Working with producer T-Bone Burnett again, this self-titled album picks up where Crazy Heart left off. Vinyl version due August 23.

Fool’s Gold - Leaves No Trace CD/LP (Iamsound)
Blends African influences with ‘80s new wave and indie pop.

CDs:

Pepper Rabbit - Red Velvet Snowball CD/LP (Kanine)
Incorporating eleven instruments and influences spanning generations from Portishead to David Bowie and Supertramp to Jamie Lidell, the group expands on their brand of psychedelic pop music. “Pepper Rabbit makes swinging pop that sounds like the result of a raid on Sufjan Steven’s instrument stash.” -- Filter

Dom - Family Of Love CDEP/12” (Astralwerks)
Ever since he went from selling low budget beats out of a Worcester bedroom to pursuing his own twisted version of pop music, Dom has made one thing clear: his undying desire to deliver heaven-sent harmonies and hooks that are heavier than -- and about as colorful as -- his pink paisley guitar.

The Horrors - Skying CD/LP+MP3 (XL)
Third studio album, produced by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. British art-rock for the lonely and haunted.

The Throne (Jay Z + Kanye West) - Watch The Throne CD (Def Jam)
Available Friday, August 12. A year-in-the-making collaboration between the two hip-hop heavy weights features production from The RZA, The Neptunes and Kanye’s longtime collaborator Mike Dean.

Also includes extensive 80-page booklet.

The Features - Wilderness CD (Bug Music/Serpents And Snakes)
"Wilderness is a solid album from beginning to end, and the band maintains a high level of intensity without suffering from burnout. This is accomplished through a subtle push and pull within the songs allowing enough room for the music to expand and contract just enough to keep the threat of monotony at bay." -- Chicagoist.com

Fruit Bats - Tripper CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Fifth Fruit Bats album is a bittersweet meditation on hitting the road, leaving the familar behind and reinventing yourself.

Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown.

WILCO LOVES THEIR LABEL

And it’s a good thing too, since they own it. Their new 7” single is the first thing released on the new label, dBpm records, and it’s in stores now. “I Might”, the A side, is from the upcoming full length THE WHOLE LOVE, and the B side, “I Love My Label” is a cover of a Nick Lowe tune (who just happens to be heading out on tour with them. Synchronicity!)

And hey, Wilco loves their label, but we know you love your record store. Tell us why, in our I LOVE MY RECORD STORE contest, and you could win a trip for two to see Wilco in Central Park on 9/22!

TAKING THE PULSE OF 311

If we told you that P-Nut and SA are back, you’d know we weren’t talking about a candy bar, right? We’re talking about the rock/reggae band 311, roaring out of the Omaha Nebraska heartland, and bringing the party for the last two decades (plus!). The new album UNIVERSAL PULSE is out this week, and participating indie record stores will have a trippy piece of lenticular (3D-ish) artwork for you, when you buy the new record (CD or VINYL) as well as details on how to get a special remix download, that’s not on the record. While supplies last, and in this 311 summer—they’ve already hit the road, with that aforementioned party--we expect that won’t be long.

Trigun movie poster

We're super excited that our friends at the Plaza Theatre (our city's oldest and only independently run movie theatre) will be showing Trigun: Badlands Rumble this coming week. As you may already know, Atlanta doesn't often show anime on the big screen, so this is a special treat. Trigun: Badlands Rumble will be playing at the Plaza for one week ONLY from Friday, July 8th, through Thursday, July 14th. If you're a fan of anime and/or manga (or any sort of animated films or comic books), please come out to the Plaza Theatre and show your support for this art form. Tell all your friends. BRING all your friends! If we can show that there is an audience for anime here in Atlanta, hopefully the Plaza will be able to book more anime films in the future. That would be an awesome future!

Fri: 7:30, 9:30

CDs:

Memory Tapes - Player Piano CD/LP+MP3 (Carpark)
While Seek Magic was quite an electronic sounding record with lots of dance music tropes, Player Piano is all about the melody. Also available on clear vinyl.

Gardens & Villa - Gardens & Villa CD/LP (Secretly Canadian)
Gardens & Villa channel all the taut pop precisions of ‘90s Britpop of bands like Blur (borrowed from the ‘60s anyhow), and send it through an ‘80s synth filter both undeniably coastal and modern.

Pure X - Pleasure CD (Acéphale)
Pure X (formally known as Pure Ecstasy) specializes in making music that feels more than sounds. Pleasure is an atmospheric record that reaches the boundaries of dream pop, shoegaze and other emotional and hazy genres.

CDs:

Gillian Welch - The Harrow & The Harvest CD (Acony)
New release from the Americana/bluegrass singer/songwriter. The Harrow & The Harvest, Gillian's first album in eight years, is an all-acoustic affair containing 10 new songs.

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up CD/LP (Sub Pop)
“A sonic world made up of discordant beats, swirling synths, bouncing 808s and Butler’s nimble, impressionistic poetry. Straight narratives are nowhere to be found, and rhythms emerge and then vanish just as quickly. The effect can be bewildering, and yet the album is far from unfocused.” -- NPR

SBTRKT - SBTRKT CD/LP+MP3 (XL/Young Turks)
Debut full-length from the South London producer who has recently left his imprint on the UK scene by seamlessly fusing Detroit techno, Berlin electro and classic two-step into the thriving London dubstep scene.

John Maus - We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves CD/LP (Ribbon)
Questing synthesizers, tensely strung bass lines and chasing drum machines provide the perfect backdrop for John's deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal. It’s a world where The Germs jam with Jerry Goldsmith, Cabaret Voltaire relocate to Eternia and Josquin des Prez writes a new score for RoboCop.

Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Third full-length from this Canadian husband and wife duo.

Com Truise - Galactic Melt CD/LP (Ghostly International)
Com Truise taps classic sci-fi and proto-electro in a way that is distinctly early ‘80s in scope.

CDs:

Bon Iver - Bon Iver CD/LP (Jagjaguwar)
Justin Vernon returns to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there -- solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed -- but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Unknown Mortal Orchestra CD/LP (Fat Possum)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra melds break-beats with ‘70s pop harmonies and minimal Krautrock rhythms.

1,2,3 - New Heaven CD (French Kiss)
Debut album from the quixotically named indie-poppers. Vinyl version due June 28.

Ty Segall - Goodbye Bread CD/LP (Drag City)
“Ty Segall can kick out jams with the best of them, but there's more to the 23-year-old garage rock wunderkind than fuzz riffs and Cro-Magnon bashing. He has a sensitive side, too. On ‘Goodbye Bread,’ the title track from his Drag City debut, Segall reconnects with his roots as a Laguna Beach surfer dude, dialing down the distortion in favor of chill and chiming guitar chords. Best New Music.” -- Pitchfork

Jeff The Brotherhood - We Are The Champions CD/LP (Infinity Cat)
“The secret weapon on their second album is an un-ironic embrace of the elegant, harmony-rich hooks and wide-eyed lyrics of rock forebears the Righteous Brothers, which gives the Orralls' blistering tunes their own earnest, romantic edge.” -- Spin

CDs:

Woods - Sun & Shade CD/LP (Woodsist)
Folk-rock, fuzz, tambourines and tapes. “Loose, shuffling and tuneful, the abridged Woods experience sounds more like Wowee Zowee than Workingman’s Dead, but it hits just the right contradictory note of tight arrangements and breathing-room playing to get that back-porch, weird America vibe.” -- Pitchfork

Vetiver - The Errant Charm CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Vetiver’s fifth full-length is a superb album for afternoon idyll. Some of the group's most unabashed pop songs to date.

Sebadoh - Bakesale [Reissue] 2xCD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Deluxe reissue of Sebadoh’s acclaimed 1994 album includes a bonus disc of B-sides, EP tracks and rarities.

CDs:

Arctic Monkeys - Suck It & See CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
Arctic Monkey’s fourth album is light and airy, filmic but intimate, carefully arranged but deceptively powerful. They've perfectly meshed their hard and soft sides on this one.

Battles - Gloss Drop CD/2xLP (Warp)
A bewitching, entrancing album that defies both categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early EPs, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them once more into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness that sets them apart.

Black Lips - Arabia Mountain CD/LP/LP+7” (Vice)
The founding fathers of Atlanta’s “flower punk” movement’s sixth album is produced by Mark Ronson, Lockett Pundt of Deerhunter and a human skull with a mic jammed into it. Limited edition vinyl version contains bonus 7”.

The Coathangers - Larceny & Old Lace CD/LP (Suicide Squeeze)
Where their past recordings were a mash-up of garage rock’s rough and loose instrumentation and no-wave's abrasive tonalities, Larceny & Old Lace showcases a broader songwriting range.

Cults - Cults CD/LP (Columbia)
Self-titled debut from enigmatic, pop duo Cults was recorded and self-produced in the band's hometown of New York City. Working with engineer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells) the album is chock full of some of the most deliciously offbeat, slanted and enchanted songs you're likely to hear all year.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - It’s A Corporate World CD (WB)
“DEJJ’s sound is the best of indie rock infused with '60s pop psychedelia, which could easily be two irreconcilable styles. Their music splits the difference between The Beach Boys and Beach House. It's dreamy rock with nostalgic roots.” -- boiseweekly.com. Vinyl version due June 28.

Givers - In Light CD/LP (Glassnote)
Givers is a band made up of five friends from Lafayette, Louisiana -- it should be stated that the music they make is simply an ongoing reflection of their bond. Givers brings you their first full-length, recorded during breaks from touring, which is a major priority of the band.

Hooray For Earth - True Loves CD/LP (Dovecote)
Pitchfork has compared True Loves lead single favorably to artists like MGMT and Yeasayer.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the Week of May 31

This week I'm really excited about the debut LP from Seattle-based Seapony. We also have new stuff from My Morning Jacket, The Vaccines, and Death Cab For Cutie. Stop by this week and check 'em out! - Emily

We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here --> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX

[Editor's note: Hey, y'all, some of these titles may not arrive at our store until later this week. It's usually just the indie label stuff that arrives later, like Thursday or Friday. Call ahead if you want to make sure the new thing that you want really super-duper bad is actually in stock right this very second. The store number is 404-215-9511. One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Seapony - Go With Me CD/LP (Hardly Art)
Debut full-length from this refreshingly simplistic Seattle dream-pop trio. Fuzz-drenched guitar playing with simple chord progressions, topped with concise melodic hooks and breathy vocals.

My Morning Jacket - Circuital CD/2xLP (ATO)
Circuital was recorded in Louisville, KY and Nashville, TN, and was co-produced by frontman Jim James and Tucker Martine (R.E.M., Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists). The result is yet another reinvention of their sound that both forges new ground and maintains the distinct spirit of MMJ’s previous work.

The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? CD (Columbia)
37-minutes of "lo-fi, heart-grabbing rock & roll” Q Magazine. “A mix of pop-punk, chillwave and classic good-time pop & roll” NME. “Glimmering, lo-fi punk-pop laced with dreamy summertime harmonies” The Fly.

Death Cab For Cutie - Codes And Keys CD/2xLP (Barsuk/Atlantic)
DCFC’s seventh album breaks away, though not completely, from the guitar-driven style they are known for, instead making use of piano and electronically centered songs.

Friendly Fires - Pala CD/2xLP (XL)
“...(Friendly Fires) songs are wonderfully overstuffed with reshuffled and reinvigorated ideas from the 1970s and ‘80s post-punk guitars, funk beats, sing-along choruses, worldbeat percussion...” --New York Times

One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Other Lives - Tamer Animals CD/LP (TBD)
“The music draws as much from the rich choral folk harmonies of Fleet Foxes as it does from the relaxed organic pop music of New York City’s emerging favorites Milagres in its grand, orchestral arrangement. The results, in so far as we have available to us, are evocative with an overwhelming sense of natural wonder, set with earthy and under-stated vocals, and weathered with gentle multi-instrumental strings and an expansive and arboreal sound-palette.” -- Thismusicwins.com

Wild Beasts - Smother CD (Domino)
“On their third LP Smother, pensive synth crooners Wild Beasts brood with haunting introspection and stunning uncertainty, evoking emotion in a heartrending manner similar to the way that fellow Brit Antony Hegarty does so well.” -- Paste. Vinyl due May 17.

Hooray For Earth - True Loves CD/LP (Dovecoat)
The title single “True Loves” boasts thumping drums combined with blips and synths, surprising breakdowns and soaring, apathetic lyrics to rival the likes of MGMT and Yeasayer.

The Antlers - Burst Apart CD/LP (French Kiss)
An inspired melding of complex electronic textures and acutely emotive song craft.

Tyler The Creator - Goblin CD/2xCD/2xLP+MP3 (XL)
“The last thing you’d say about the prolific young rap collective Odd Future is that they’re boring. You could say a lot of things about them, but you can t say that they’re just like everyone else... You know what else? They’re really good. Especially their ringleader, called Tyler The Creator.” --NPR. Deluxe edition includes a second disc with three bonus tracks, a 12-page booklet, and a fold out poster.

Okkervil River - I Am Very Far CD/2xLP (Jagjaguwar)
"The goal was to push my brain to places it didn't want to go. The idea was to not have any idea to keep myself confused about what I was doing," frontman Will Sheff says about Okkervil River's new album.

Thee Oh Sees - Castlemania CD/2xLP (In The Red)
Happy pop melodies, sweet and somber tunes, psychedelic moves galore, cover versions of The Creation and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and at least one garage stomper all rub elbows on Thee Oh Sees' "sunshine pop" album.

Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math CD/LP (Columbia)
Simple Math is a story about a 23-year old who questions everything from marriage to love to religion to sex. It’s chock full of monster riffs, vigorous string arrangements, deep hooks and has miles of melodies that encase a compelling coming-of-age story told in the first person. While supplies last, customers can get: Limited Edition Tour Poster, Autographed CD booklet and iPhone4 skin! PS: Cage the Elephant fans can also get the tour poster if they buy their latest album. http://www.flickr.com/photos/criminalrecords_auroracoffee/5707745041/in/photostream/

Lonely Island - Turtleneck & Chain CD+DVD/LP (Universal Republic)

CDs:

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Drawing inspiration from folk and rock from about '65 to '73, and Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks in particular, Fleet Foxes heighten and extend themselves, adding instrumentation (clarinet, music box, pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar, Tibetan singing bowls, vibraphone, etc., along with more traditional instrumentation), with a focus on clear, direct lyrics, and an emphasis on group vocal harmonies.

Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two CD (Capitol)
Long awaited eighth album -- Hot Sauce Committee Part Two was produced by Beastie Boys and mixed by Philippe Zdar. This album marks Mike "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "Ad Rock" Horovitz and Adam "MCA" Yauch's first full-length effort since 2007's Grammy-winning all-instrumental The Mix-Up. Vinyl version due June 21.

Architecture In Helsinki - Moment Bends CD/LP (Downtown)
New album is equal parts Italia '82, California '79 and Melbourne 2011.

Wild Beasts - Smother CD/LP (Domino)
Maintaining the oscillating falsetto and baritone vocals, lyrical wit, and a penchant for seedier topics present in their earlier work, Smother incorporates rich electronic textures and a subtlety of melody not heard before.

CDs:

Poly Styrene - Generation Indigo CD (Future Noise)
New album from the former X-ray Spex frontwoman.

The Fresh & Onlys - Secret Walls CDEP/12” (Sacred Bones)
The cavernous opening sounds reveal the strong threads of hazy post-punk melancholy that have been woven throughout the band's catalog and have now fully matured.

Julian Lynch - Terra CD/LP (Underwater Peoples)
“From the Durutti Column-smooth melodies and the Indian-inspired tabla beats to the sound of circular breathing on a clarinet, Terra mines our collective past, scouring the edges of obscurity and reconstruing its findings into something unclassifiable.” -- Altered Zones

Cass McCombs - Wit’s End CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
The idiosyncratic, and hugely underrated singer/songwriter's third album for Domino is his darkest yet. “Best New Music” [8.4] -- Pitchfork

New and/or Notable Stuff for the Week of April 19

This week we've got some new stuff from The Head and The Heart, tUnE-yArDs, and Gorillaz. Stop by the store this week and check 'em out! - Emily

We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here --> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX

One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

The Head And The Heart - The Head And The Heart CD (Sub Pop)
The Head And The Heart’s music pulses effervescently both explosively danceable and intuitively intelligent. With Americana roots and strong vocal harmonics that swell like a river, this band finds its anchor in solid songwriting that has even the jaded humming along by the second listen.

tUnE-yArDs- w h o k i l l CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)
Garbus has applied the tUnE-yArDs live approach to her studio work for the first time. Her tools have not changed. Rather, she's added more buttons and joints to those already being used (one essential new joint is dexterous bass member Nate Brenner, who co-wrote a few songs).

Gorillaz - The Fall CD/LP (Virgin)
From Montreal to Vancouver via Seattle, Texas and Toronto, over 32 days on their North American Tour this autumn, Gorillaz recorded a musical diary. The result is a collection of 15 tracks, some with vocals, some without, some combined performances and some solo.

Record Store Day 2011 at Criminal Records

CRIMINAL RECORDS CELEBRATES 4TH ANNUAL RECORD STORE DAY WITH LIVE MUSIC, EXCLUSIVE RECORDS, FREE STUFF, plus A VERY SPECIAL REUNION PERFORMANCE BY THE LEGENDARY NEW WAVE PIONEERS THE dB'S, THEIR FIRST ATLANTA PERFORMANCE IN OVER TWENTY YEARS

On Saturday, April 16, Criminal Records will celebrate the fourth annual Record Store Day with over a thousand other independently owned record stores across the country and around the world, hoping to bring awareness to the unique culture of record stores and to highlight the special place that the stores occupy in their local communities.

FULL SCHEDULE
Criminal Records will open 1 hour earlier at 10:00AM.

Please note: The live entertainment schedule is subject to change.

2pm -- AKUYOU

The ugly beauty of Swans, the Bad Seeds and PJ Harvey. Uncompromising and confrontational. Awesome. This band features a former Criminal Records staffer.

3pm -- ORYX & CRAKE

Oryx and Crake produces beautifully crafted orchestral rock that mixes with their story telling to create a truly unique sound. I might hear Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire because each band has so much going on with their sound, but they seem to bring it all together so well.

5pm -- THE dB'S

Record Store Day exclusive show with an all-new dB's 7" single!!! This limited edition 45rpm single features “Picture Sleeve” (co-written by Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple) and “Write Back” on the flipside (Will Rigby’s first song with The dB’s). Both songs are from the forthcoming album -- their first with the original four guys in thirty years.

6pm -- HOLLY GOLIGHTLY

Ms. Golightly brings her mixture of ghostly blues, twangy shuffles, and all around two-step hotness to our store. If you miss this set, you're a lost cause.

7pm -- FAN MODINE

Fan Modine return with another exclusive and VERY limited edition Record Store Day release, producing their forthcoming album in a hand-made, limited edition of 100 for the special day. “Gratitude For The Shipper” will be available on thick 150g double vinyl, while supplies last. For fans of that music that you like, like the dB's.

8pm -- BRITISH SEA POWER

Supporting their concert the following night (Sunday, April 17th, at the EARL), British Sea Power stop by the store for an intimate in-store set. The band is celebrating Record Store Day in Atlanta (and all over the U.S.) while their fans back home celebrate RSD with a UK-only double 7" called "Living Is So Easy." It's okay though -- for those in attendance at the in-store, Criminal Records was able to secure copies of this limited single. We're the only store in the U.S. that will have them.

 9pm -- TURF WAR

Eric saw Turf War at SXSW and asked them to play Record Store Day as they walked off stage. That's a solid reccomendation. If you like Creedence, you'll like Turf War. You do like Creedence, don't you?

10pm -- EM KEMPF

Em Kempf, of the Back Pockets, Creative Loafing's Best Experimental Music Act of 2010, returns to the stage to close out the celebration. This will be the one you tell your kids about, don't pretend like you were there, you're invited. Don't miss this one, a Criminal Record Store Day specific show stopper.

New and/or Notable Releases for the Week of April 12

This week we have some great stuff from Bass Drum of Death, Crystal Stilts, Jason Isbel and the 400 Unit (playing an in-store on April 14!!), and more! Stop by the store and check 'em out. And don't forget! This Saturday (April 16) is Record Store Day! We'll have some exclusive releases and free, all-ages entertainment from British Sea Power, Holly Golightly, The dB's and more! Check out the full line up and more information here --> http://criminalatl.com/Event/37995 - Emily

CDs:

Bass Drum Of Death - Gb City CD/LP (Fat Possum)
Armed with a guitar, drum kit, and USB microphone, frontman John Barrett threw together scuzzy pop songs steeped in punk and doo-wop that dive into topics such as taking drugs, having sex, and other regular teenage activities.

Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion CD/LP (Slumberland)
With In Love With Oblivion, Crystal Stilts stretch things further than before, honing their songcraft and indulging their more strung-out sides, full of elliptical verses and perfectly chiming guitars, cranky pop organs and the punkest of rhythms.

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit - Here We Rest CD/LP (Lightning Rod)
Second album from Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, and Isbell’s third.

Generationals - Actor-Castor CD (Park The Van)
Debut long-player from New Orleans' Generationals combines the warm, inviting vibe of classic pop cuts with modern ingenuity. Everything from the shimmering synth lines and spare handclaps of "Yours Forever" to the lonesome keys and lacerated drum loops of "Black And White."

Panda Bear - Tomboy CD/LP (Paw Tracks)
Noah Lennox (Animal Collective) steps away from the sample-based parameters of his previous record Person Pitch, incorporating more guitar and synth. Tomboy is the welcome return of one of the most prolific and consistent audio pioneers in recent memory.

TV On The Radio - Nine Types Of Light CD/Deluxe CD/LP (DGC/Interscope)
A lush and beautiful album that stands apart from the group's previous work. If their other albums had shades of dystopia and distress, this album, sung by Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, is filled with songs about longing and love. Deluxe Edition adds three bonus tracks. Free “Nine Types Of Light” movie poster with purchase -- while supplies last!

Sonny And The Sunsets
- Hit After Hit CD/LP (Fat Possum)

Vintage-style west coast pop songs that tell sordid tales of distant travels, heavenly visions and otherworldly despair.

Vivian Girls - Share The Joy CD/LP (Polyvinyl)
Third album continues to sharpen and refine their transcendent mix of garage thrash, girl-group warmth and infectious pop hooksmanship.

New and/or Notable Releases for the week of April 5

This week we have new stuff from The Kills, Cold Cave, Alela Diane & Wild Divine, The Raveonettes, and more! Stop by and check 'em out!

One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

The Kills  - Blood Pressures CD/LP (Domino)
New album keeps their basic sound intact -- searing guitars, driving rhythms and sexually charged lyrical savvy. The 11 tracks on Blood Pressures find The Kills embracing a fuller sound; there is heavier instrumentation and layered, huge-sounding harmonies with Jamie and Alison uniting in their trademark singsong vocal style over tom heavy primitive beats.

Cold Cave - Cherish The Light Years CD/LP (Matador)
Cold Cave's second album is a tour-de-force of pounding synths and soaring romantic melody. It manages to unite Power, Corruption And Lies-era New Order, late-'70s Scott Walker, and the dark stadium pop of mid-period Depeche Mode, with the sensibilities of LCD Soundsystem and The National.

Alela Diane & Wild Divine - Alela Dianne & Wild Divine CD (Rough Trade)
The soulful backwoods chanteuse eschews the reverb drenched banjo and violin that marked her previous work, electing to join forces with her new makeshift band, Wild Divine. Despite the changes, Ms. Diane's hauntingly beautiful voice is still the centerpiece. Vinyl version due April 19.

Maritime - Human Hearts CD/LP (Dangerbird)
New album from the band fronted by singer/songwriter Davie VonBohlen, ex-captain of a ship called The Promise Ring.

The Raveonettes - Raven In The Grave CD/LP (Vice)
The fifth album from the Danish duo is their darkest yet.

Timber Timbre - Creep On Creepin’ On CD/LP (Arts & Crafts)
From guttural groans to eerie doo-wop inspired pleas, Creep On Creepin’ On is textured and commanding, stirring proof of the unwavering powers of obsession and possession.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of March 29

There's a ton of new stuff to tell you about this week including new Mountain Goats, Hunx and His Punx, Radiohead, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (pictured) and many, many more! Stop by this week and check these out along with the other amazing new releases! But wait, there's more! We have some free with purchase goodies for you all to enjoy, check out the list of stuff here --> http://on.fb.me/hVUTXX - Emily

One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

The Mountain Goats - All Eternals Deck CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
All Eternals Deck, which refers to an apocryphal tarot deck. "The songs cluster around themes of hidden things and the dread that hidden things inspire," says singer/songwriter John Darnielle, "but also the excitement, the attraction, the magnetic draw that scary unknown hidden things exert."

Hunx And His Punx - Too Young To Be In Love CD/LP (Hardly Art)
Too Young To Be In Love is the first fully realized Hunx And His Punx album. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian-one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids.

Radiohead - The King Of Limbs CD/LP (TBD)
Produced by longtime collaborator, Nigel Godrich, The King Of Limbs is Radiohead’s eighth studio release and contains single “Lotus Flower.” Free 19”x19” lithograph with purchase, while supplies last!

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Belong CD/LP (Slumberland/Collective Sounds)
The beginning of “Belong” -- the title track of their new album -- features the indie-pop band casually jangling along. But it's something of a red herring. Right at the fifteen-second mark, the guitars blitz out louder and harder than anything on their self-titled debut. The gargantuan distortion recalls nothing less than prime-era Smashing Pumpkins, which makes sense considering Belong was produced by Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder. Free 12”x12” lithograph with purchase, while supplies last!

The Strokes - Angels CD/LP (RCA)
Highly anticipated fourth album.

Belong - Common Era CD/LP (Kranky)
Dreamy, fuzzy, damaged lo-fi shoegaze not unlike The Jesus And Mary Chain and Flying Saucer Attack with melodies that are passionate and dispassionate, grey yet technicolor, ghostly and palpable, distant yet immediate, grainy and focused.

James Blake - James Blake CD (Universal Republic)
Debut album from The London-based dubstep artist.

This week we've got some new stuff from J. Mascis, The Joy Formidable, The Damwells, Mother Mother and more! Stop by the store and check 'em out! - Emily

CDs:
J. Mascis
 - Several Shades Of Why CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Nearly all-acoustic, Several Shades Of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees).

The Joy Formidable -The Big Roar CD (Atlantic)

The Village Voice called The Big Roar’s first single, "I Don't Want To See You Like This," "one of the band's best offerings yet, a breakup song that looks forward to the other side of heartache, with racing guitars and thundering drums that seem engineered to snap both parts of the still-attached couple out of their sad state.”

The Damnwells - No One Listens To The Band Anymore CD (PledgeMusic Recordings)

Formed in Brooklyn in 2001, The Damnwells represent the songwriting efforts of singer/guitarist Alex Dezen, whose mix of alt-country and alternative pop/rock is supported by a variety of talented musicians and producers.

Mother Mother - Eureka CD/LP (Last Gang)

Eccentric, hook laden pop-meets-rock songs housed in creative arrangements with clever lyrics and intricate harmonies.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of March 8

This week we have a lot of awesome new stuff from Wye Oak, Kurt Vile, Starf##ker, Cut Copy and more! Stop by this week and check these releases out and more! - Emily

Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Wye Oak - Civilian CD/LP (Merge)

Civilian is a kind of 21st-century folk music, imbued with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic color.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)
The Philadelphia singer/songwriter's second full-length is a gorgeously layered record, once again both straddling, and tearing apart the line between pastoral Americana and modern indie rock grandeur.

Starf##ker - Reptilians CD/LP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)
In the past, Portland, OR-based Starf##ker (STRFKR) has received almost as much attention for their not-always-accessible moniker as for their immensely accessible dance hooks. Reptilians, STRFKR's second full-length, is endlessly catchy, hook-laden pop.

Cut Copy - Zonoscope [Deluxe Edition] CD+DVD (Modular)
Deluxe Edition features a bonus track and a DVD that includes a making of the album documentary.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of March 1

We've got a lot of great stuff this week including new releases from Dum Dum Girls, Papercuts, The Rural Alberta Advantage and more! Stop by the store this week and check these great release out! - Emily

CDs:

Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High CDEP/12” (Sub Pop)
Dum Dum Girls follow up their fuzzy, girl group-inspired album I Will Be with this new EP comprised of three originals and a cover of The Smiths' track "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out."

Papercuts - Fading Parade CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Dream pop of the highest order. Wide-ranging and adventurous thanks to strings, autoharp, Mellotron, Moog, guitar, piano, and echoplex. Think Belle And Sebastian teaming up with Slowdive and Phil Spector.

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Departing CD/LP+MP3 (Saddle Creek)
Departing strings together themes of small towns, Canadian fall and winter, breakup, and redemption and serves as a companion piece to their debut album Hometowns.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of February 22

This week we have awesome new stuff from Toro y Moi, The Luyas (I highly, highly recommend them!), Puro Instinct and more! Stop by the store and check 'em out! - Emily

[Editor's note: Hey, y'all, some of these titles may not arrive at our store until later this week. It's usually just the indie label stuff that arrives later, like Thursday or Friday. One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Toro Y Moi - Underneath The Pine CD/LP+MP3 (Carpark)
Underneath The Pine is evocative of R. Stevie Moore's homespun ruminations, David Axelrod's sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of Toro Y Moi's first record Causers Of This. Oh hey guess what, Toro y Moi will be at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, March 12 with Cloud Nothings. Get your tickets here at the store or here --> http://www.ticketalternative.com/Events/13129.aspx

The Luyas

A picture-perfect collection of echo-drenched space-age pop songs, Too Beautiful To Work buzzes and pops into retro-futurist sonic bliss.

Hazy, swirling pop from the duo group formerly known as Pearl Harbor.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of February 15

There's a lot to be excited about this week as far as new releases go. I know I'm super excited about the self-titled debut from British band Yuck. It's excellent, you should definitely check it out. We also have new stuff from Off!, PJ Harvey, Bright Eyes, and many, many more. Stop by the store this week and check 'em out! - Emily

CDs:

Yuck - Yuck CD/LP (Fat Possum)
This is a confident, wildly ambitious record, but also one which brims over with a ragged warmth and tenderness, tipping its hat at alt music heroes past such as East River Pipe, Dinosaur Jr and Sparklehorse while at the same time retaining a unique identity entirely its own.

OFF! - First Four EPs CD (Vice)
L.A.-based OFF! features Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless/Hot Snakes/Rocket From The Crypt). “This music is built for a climate of frustration and powerlessness, and its bare-knuckled
punch-in-the-face is a long-needed wake-up call to nostalgic escapism. Get mad instead.” [8.5] -- Pitchfork

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake CD (Vagrant)
New album recorded in a 19th Century church in Dorset, on a cliff-top overlooking the sea. Let England Shake was created with a cast of musicians including such long-standing allies as Flood, John Parish, and Mick Harvey. CD available now -- vinyl version due March 1.

Bright Eyes - The People’s Key CD/2xLP+CD (Saddle Creek)
Bright Eyes’ seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2007’s Cassadaga. Fully realized and bursting with charisma, The People’s Key is an assured and accomplished album, artfully arranged and filled with the engaging and mesmeric songwriting for which Oberst is renowned.

The third album from the Australian synthpop band. This is Cut Copy boiled down to their purest form: a suite of futuristic visions built upon primal rhythm tracks. CD now, vinyl version available March 8.

Akron/Family - Cosmic Birth & Journey Of Shinju TNT CD/2xLP (Dead Oceans)
Cosmic Birth & Journey Of Shinju TNT layers thousands of minute imperceptible samples of their first recordings with fuzzed-out representations of their present beings to induce pleasant emotional feeling states and many momentary transcendent inspirations.

Wild Nothing - Gemini [Expanded] CD/LP (Captured Tracks/Mexican Summer)

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of February 1

I'm a little late this week, but we've got some good stuff to tell you about! First, we're really excited about Bobby Long's full length album, A Winter Tale. Also this week, we have new stuff from The Go! Team, North Mississippi All-Stars (they're doing an in-store, Sat. 2/5!), and Men. And in on vinyl, I'm excited to announce we have the new Smith Westerns, Dye It Blonde (I love this!), and Tennis' Cape Dory. So stop by the store and check all of this great stuff out and more! - Emily

Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Bobby Long - A Winter Tale CD/2xLP+CD (ATO)
Recorded in London, the 11-track album showcases Bobby’s raw vocal talent and poetic acoustic genius as well as Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) on backing vocals, B. J. Cole (Elton John, Sting) on pedal steel, and collaboration with Icelandic singer Lay Low on several songs. Blogcritics.com says, “With raw vocal power and smart, evocative lyrics, Bobby Long is a folk singer with a spirited intensity that puts him outside and above the masses of singer-songwriter roaming our cities, towns, and social networks.” BONUS: Buy the album and get a wristband for our exclusive in-store performance on Friday, April 1st (7pm).

North Mississippi AllStars - Keys To The Kingdom CD (Songs Of The South)
New album from the North Mississippi Allstars is a celebratory declaration of life in the face of death. The origins of the album are honest and raw: a father died and child was born.

The Go! Team - Rolling Blackouts CD/LP+MP3 (Memphis Industries)
Third album from the British electro/rock/hip-hop/garage outfit. Frantic, seesaw brass stabs and delay-pedal vapor trails. Eagles riding the thermals. A call and response between a flute and a girl gang. Time Lapse through the seasons at Yosemite Park. A ray-gun synth and a steel drum, Rolling Blackouts is epic and bratty, subtle and sweet.

Men - Talk About Body CD/LP (Iamsound)
New project from Le Tigre's JD Samson.

New and/or Notable stuff for the week of January 25

We've got a lot of new stuff this week including new releases from Iron & Wine, Destroyer, Say Hi, and Gang of Four. And the release I'm most excited about: Cloud Nothings' self-titled album. There's a lot of stuff for you to enjoy so stop by the store and check these out! - Emily

[Editor's note: Hey, y'all, some of these titles may not arrive at our store until later this week. It's usually just the indie label stuff that arrives later, like Thursday or Friday. One of the guys can put your stuff on hold for you. Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:
Cloud Nothings - Cloud Nothings CD/LP (Carpark)
The self-titled Cloud Nothings album shines through with a crispness and boldness that main man Dylan Baldi has always envisioned. The songs now sound as they do live: full of energy, precision, and catchy bits.

Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other CD/LP+CD (WB)
Builds upon the textured, polyrythmic sound of 2007's The Shepherd's Dog, and introduces more ‘60s and ‘70s pop influences on top of Sam Beam's already engaging, hushed folk sounds. Free button-pack with purchase -- while supplies last!

Destroyer - Kaputt CD/2xLP+MP3 (Merge)
Vinyl version contains an exclusive 20-minute bonus song and download coupon.

Say Hi - Um, Uh Oh CD/LP (Barsuk)

New and/or Notable stuff for the week of January 18

I have a lot of stuff to tell you about this week! Seriously, there's a lot of great stuff on this list of new releases. We've got new stuff from Smith Westerns, Braids, Tennis, Ducktails, Ponderosa, and The Decemberists. And vinyl reissues from The Kinks and Spiritualized. Also, 7" singles from Lower Dens, La Sera, Cee-Lo/Band of Horses, and Cloud Nothings! Lots and lots of good stuff for your ears! Stop by the store this week and check 'em out! - Emily

Thanks for your understanding. xoxo]

CDs:

Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde CD/LP (Fat Possum)
A cleaner/higher quality recording of lush, layered timeless pop songs with emphasis on the guitar virtuosity of Led Zeppelin and the arena rock anthems of Oasis.

Braids - Native Speaker CD/LP (Kanine)
Delicate layering gives Braids’ experimental pop epics just enough breath to playfully explore the depth of ambient melody.

Tennis - Cape Dory CD (Fat Possum)
While Tennis could bring to mind Camera Obscura in the pairing of sugary vocals and melodies that ruled another era, the tracks on Cape Dory lack the cynicism that color lead singer Tracyanne Campbell’s lyrics. Tennis’ songs boast the combination of vocals, guitar, keyboards and drums, proving that a great album doesn’t have to be an overly complicated one.

Ducktails - III: Arcade Dynamics CD (Woodsist)
Real Estate guitarist Matthew Mondanile’s one-man psychedelic pop project.

Ponderosa - Moonlight Revival CD (New West)
Straight-ahead rock band skillfully blend harmonies, guitar riffs and the Hammond organ with mellifluous vocals.

The Decemberists - The King Is Dead CD/CD+DVD/CD+DVD+Book/LP+MP3 (EMI)
A set of ten concise, country-based songs -- marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the band's wildly ambitious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards Of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three. Deluxe Edition includes the "Pendarvia" DVD -- a 30 minute documentary on the making of the album with studio footage of the band. Super Deluxe Edition includes the DVD plus a 72-page book with photographs by Autumn DeWilde and illustrations by Carson Ellis. Free lithograph with purchase of any version -- while supplies last!

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of January 11

I hope everyone is enjoying HOTHLANTA! Even though we were out for a couple of days, new releases must be announced! So here they are. I'm mostly excited about Tapes 'n Tapes latest album, Outside. And they're touring! They'll be here on Friday, February 11th at The EARL! We also have the latest from the Generationals, The Fall, British Sea Power, and more. And don't forget about the vinyl reissues we have this week from Chet Baker, Murder By Death, The Decemberists, and X. And in addition to all those we have some new 7" releases from Cake and The Get Up Kids along with anthologies from The Pixies, Love And Rockets, and more! Be safe this week and hopefully we'll see you at the store when the ice melts! - Emily

CDs:

Tapes ‘N Tapes - Outside CD/LP (Ibid)
“All in all, Outside is a solid third album and a return to form of sorts from a band clearly in the midst of a big transition. Full of many of the more winning qualities of their first two records, it’s an LP that has its fair share of memorable moments.” -- Consequence Of Sound

Generationals - Trust CDEP (Park The Van)
On Trust, the band is audibly transitioning from a jangling, sun-kissed sound in the vein of Aztec Camera or Felt to pop drones distinctly more hypnotic, textured, and challenging to conjure accurate comparisons for.

The Fall - This Nation’s Saving Grace 3xCD+Book (Beggars Banquet)
Omnibus edition includes the album with its original vinyl track sequence, previously unreleased original working mixes, alternative edits, six Peel Session tracks, and a 48-page book featuring new interviews.

British Sea Power - Valhalla Dancehall CD/LP (Rough Trade)
Valhalla Dancehall is BSP's fourth album proper, following the Mercury-nominated Do You Like Rock Music? (2008) and The Man Of Aran soundtrack (2009). The album invokes a wild-eyed internationalism, alluding to both the Norse mythos and Jamaican discos to the Viking heaven and Caribbean good times.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of December 7

This week brings us the new release from No Joy, Ghost Blonde, on Mexican Summer. Also out this week TRON: Legacy soundtrack featuring music from Daft Punk and Sufjan Steven's All Delighted People EP. Stop by the store this week and check out these releases and more! - Emily

CDs:

No Joy - Ghost Blonde CD (Mexican Summer)
Builds upon the revitalization of shoegaze pop in recent times with a melodic fervor and angst that many of their contemporaries fail to capitalize on. There are moments on Ghost Blonde that match the challenges laid down by My Bloody Valentine and Lush.

Soundtrack (Daft Punk) - TRON: Legacy CD (Walt Disney)
Grammy award-winning Daft Punk, who takes music as seriously as TRON fans take computer references, scored TRON: Legacy. It's no accident that the group's two visionary musicians are TRON fans, too. Having grown up with an admiration for the groundbreaking film, the critically acclaimed French duo composed and produced the album. They assembled a symphony of 100 world-class musicians in London and recorded the orchestra at Britain’s premier scoring facility, AIR Lyndhurst Studios.

Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People CDEP/2x12” (Asthmatic Kitty)
New EP built around two different versions of the long-form epic ballad, a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon's "Sounds Of Silence."

Corinne Bailey Rae - Is This Love

British songstress Corinne Bailey Rae takes a brief break from songwriting for her new project The Love (OUT NOW), an EP mini-album of cover songs set for pre-Valentine's Day release January 25.  The new Love EP, her first new recordings since her 2010 sophomore album The Sea, contains songs by Paul McCartney ("My Love"), Prince ("I Wanna Be Your Lover") and Belly ("Low Red Moon") along with Rae's take on "Que Sera Sera", the Doris Day classic that she's been featuring recently in her live sets. Leading the way is a version of the Bob Marley classic "Is This Love", a song the 31-year-old singer describes as "that late, dirty 6/8 (time) thing".

Corinne Bailey Rae The Love

The Love (OUT NOW)

"I just thought about that song “Is This Love” and how poignant it sounds," says Rae, "and how it feels when it’s stretched out at that tempo. When it’s the start of a relationship and it’s this questioning—”Is this love?” “Is this it?” Is this what it feels like?”—it’s just so tentative. And I love the descriptions in the song, and I think it’s amazing, the idea of two people against the world in poverty and the idea that love is everything that you need." For her take on Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover", she says "It's just really fun! I thought, I never get to do really fun, synthy, aggressive bright things." Watch Corinne's live version of "Is This Love" after the jump. Full Idolator interview here.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of November 16

This week brings us new stuff from Bruce Springsteen and Stereolab. Stop by the store and check out these titles and many more! - Emily

CDs:

Bruce Springsteen - The Promise 2xCD/3xLP (Columbia)
Bruce Springsteen - The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story 3xCD+3xDVD (Columbia)
Two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness On The Edge Of Town recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness On The Edge of Town became." Deluxe six-disc edition adds a digitally remastered version of Darkness… plus three DVDs featuring a making of the album documentary and a plethora of live performances.

Stereolab - Not Music CD/LP (Drag City)
The first offering since Stereolab's self-imposed hiatus in 2008, Not Music is part of Tim Gane's experiment involving improvised chord sequences on piano or vibraphone, over the top of which were placed drum loops. This yielded a bumper crop of new songs, 14 of which were cherry-picked to form their previous LP, Chemical Chords.

New and/or Notable Stuff for the week of November 9

This week brings us some new releases from Bad Books, Cee Lo Green, The Tallest Man on Earth and more. And I would like to point out in the vinyl section, we have a release from The Radio Dept. who are constantly playing in my headphones. Stop by the store and check these out. - Emily

CDs:

Bad Books - Bad Books CD/LP (Razor & Tie)
A true accident if there ever was one -- Bad Books was never an intended nor calculated side project of singer songwriter Kevin Devine and Andy Hull of indie rock band Manchester Orchestra. With no agenda or expectations, what was birthed just one week later was Bad Books, a fully realized album encompassing five compositions each from both Devine and Hull, with the members of Manchester Orchestra filling out the sound and the band.

Cee Lo Green - The Lady Killer CD (Elektra/Asylum)
Cee-Lo Green's first solo album in more than six years.

The Tallest Man On Earth - Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird CD/LP (Dead Oceans)
"[T]he EP allows Matsson to explore one particular mood: a primary color in his palette, a bluesy melancholy that defines and permeates every song here." -- Pitchfork
